Maclaren Stroller Recall

from Mamasource:
ALERT: Maclaren recalls 1 Million Strollers!
Stroller maker Maclaren announced a recall today that affects about 1 million umbrella strollers that can reportedly amputate or lacerate children's fingertips. So far, the company said there have been 12 amputations across the country. This happens when children get their fingers stuck in between the stroller's side hinges while it is being opened or closed.
from CNN:
The recall affects the following models, which range in price from $100 to $400: Volo, Triumph, Quest Sport, Quest Mod, Techno XT, TechnoXLR, Twin Triumph, Twin Techno, and Easy Traveller. Consumers can contact Maclaren at 877-688-2326 or visit www.maclaren.us/recall to receive a free repair kit.

Target Bag Credit + Toy Savings

Have you notice the bag credit Target is offering?
Look at the back of their add:
"Get 5 cents off your shopping trip for every reusable bag you bring in"
A great way to make your bargains at target go even further and have less waste floating around with all those plastic bags.
This week I purchased the Little People Airport from target for 19.99 (It goes for almost $60 on Amazon) after the $10 off coupon (see previous target post). At check out I got a coupon for $5 off $50 toy purchase and $5 off $75 purchase. So...if you are planning on buying several toys at target it may be worth it to buy one first for the coupon then go back for the others.

What's for Lunch?

stewed meat with brown rice
avocado

milk

Adventures in a CSA: Sunchokes

Not only had I never had a sunchoke before, I had never even heard of them. Here is what I know about them now: they are also known as Jerusalem artichokes, they are a root, they are good for diabetics, they are yummy. You can read more about sunchokes here, here, or here.
Pictured are the raw sunchokes from my CSA.
I prepared them two different ways.
First I sliced and pan fried a few in some olive oil with salt and pepper. Then drizzled with a little lemon juice. Of the two ways I prepared them, we liked this way the best.
Next I tried roasting them some some olive oil, potatoes, onion, and rosemary. I think they would have been better had I sliced into them more, instead I left them in whole chucks and not much of the flesh was exposed. They also seemed to take longer to cook than the other vegetables I had them with, maybe again from the lack of cutting.
I would suggest giving these a try if you happen to see them.

Gratutities

I am grateful for...
--a visit from a good friend
--a fun Halloween
--my son starting to pee-pee on the potty

Random Thought....

Just bought my toddler socks today. What is the point of putting the socks in a resealable bag? Cheese I understand, but socks?!? My socks don't come in resealable bags, why would his?

Adventures in a CSA: Turnips

Turnips may not be that out there for some of you, but they were completely foreign to me. I don't know if I'd ever had them before.

I cooked these two beautiful turnips in veggie stock then served with butter, salt, and pepper. It was probably not the best way to make them, but it was a first try. My cooked photos didn't really turn out well, so you'll have to use your imagination, sorry.

Mamas Night Off

November 5 is National Men Make Dinner Day!!

OK, really, this is such a rare event we have to make a day of it, kind of sad. But a great excuse for a mama night off. I would say that picking up pizza on their way home doesn't count as cooking, but on the other hand I'll take what I can get. Grilling, Chili, a four course meal with flowers and candles, whatever it is your man does best, enjoy a night of his cooking. You can even find National Men Make Dinner Day Recipes here.

Hope you can have some fun with this one.

Organizing + Savings

Sorry posts have been slow. I've been working on organizing the house, no small feat around here, especially with a toddler "helping."

I did want to mention a sale I found as I was trying to get me linen closet in shape. Container Store is having 20% off everything. Use code SAVENOW when ordering online or print a coupon to take to the store from here. I found a few bins for less than what I would have paid even at Wal-Mart, so I was trilled. Also I love Container Store's Click and Pick-up service, you order and pay online then go straight to the check out in the store sign for your items and leave, such a great service for moms!

I am organizing the house by starting with my storage spaces, once they are in better shape I will have "a place for everything" so that I may have "everything in it's place." I am choosing this project now as I am putting away summer's clothing and getting out winter's. Wish me luck.

Have any great organization tips? storage solutions? We'd love to hear about them, just leave a comment.

Now back to work for me.

Event: Natural Flu Prevention and Care at Cheryl's Herbs

Just found another event on this topic. This one at Cheryl's Herbs.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2009
3:00 - 4:30 pm
NATURAL FLU PREVENTION & CARE

Antiviral herbs are abundant and easily available. Learn the best ways to use them and how to easily incorporate their use into an already busy lifestyle. One example of this is taking extracts when tea is not convenient. Essential oils are also simple to use by rubbing on the feet, placing in the bath or inhaled from car or house diffusers. Knowing what to do at the first symptoms can make the greatest difference in the length and severity of the flu. Taught by Cheryl Hoard, owner of Cheryl's Herbs. Please contact us for a reservation.
Cost: $10

Again, I know nothing more about this, am not endorsing it, am getting the flu vaccine for my family, but just want readers to know of this event for their own interest.

Event: Fighting the Flu at Kangaroo Kids

Upcoming event at Kangaroo Kids....

Fighting the Flu: Flu Shot vs. Natural Immunity
The first of our new monthly speaker series focusing on natural family health, this month's topic is "Fighting the Flu: Flu Shot vs. Natural Immunity." Children are welcome, and there will be coffee. It's totally free and casual.
Tuesday, October 27, 2009 6:30p to 7:30p

Personally, my family is getting the flu vaccine. But this may be an interesting conversation. Thought I'd go ahead and post it for any of you interested. Sorry I don't know more about the speaker than what is posted above.

Freebie: Parenting Magazine

What's for Lunch?

the other day I made chef salad and soup for dinner. when I did so I boiled a couple extra eggs. that was the inspiration for today's lunch. Also the fact that my son has a cold, so I was trying to pack in the vitamin C.

Toddler's lunch
--sliced hard boiled eggs, sprinkled with a little dried kelp (rich in iodine)
--kiwi (loaded with vitamin C)
--cheese
--clementines (so much easier for a tot than oranges)
--milk

My lunch
--I used the remaining egg to make egg salad and had egg salad on toast with cheese
--clementines
--water

What's for Lunch?

I was talking to another toddler mom who mentioned how hard it is to come up with lunch ideas, and I completely agree, so easy to get into a routine that uses the same foods over and over. I gave some suggestions and then thought I'd start posting some of our lunches here. It may help keep me out of a rut too, if I know other people are reading what I am cooking. So here we go....

Today my son and I had fried rice. I had some left over brown rice from dinner and wanted to use it. I totaly meant to take a photo to post, but we ate it all before I remembered to do that.

Here's what I did:

I made some of Trader Joes Organic Foursome (frozen carrots, peas, green beans, and corn)
I melted butter in a skillet
Fried 2 eggs in the butter
added the cooked veggies to the skillet
added a little olive oil
added some frozen spinach
and of course the rice
mixed and cooked until hot
yummy
(I left soy sauce off the dish, but added a little to my own serving)

My son also had a side serving of bananas (for a fruit and to give one thing I'd know he'd eat) and milk to drink.

Just sent these product picks to a friend of mine and thought I might as well post them here also.

October: National Cookie Month

As if there wasn't enough going on this month I just read that it is also national cookie month. I have to say cookies are my total weekness. Warm, soft, fresh cookies.....yum! So if you need a reason to give in to your inner cookie monster what better one than this. (and you thought October was all about the Halloween candy)

Fire Safety Month

boy is October a busy one! It's fire safety month too. So check those smoke alarms. Practice your plan. Do all those things you know you should. (more info can be found here and fire safety activities for kids here). And, save all month on fire safety supplies and equipement on Amazon.

Also I heard a great fire safety tip at a talk I went to about a year ago. The firefighter said to keep your child's bedroom door closed at night. The simple act of closing the door could save your child's life in case of a fire. What an easy thing to do!

(Now that it is time or close to time to use heaters check your carbon monoxide detectors while you're at it)

October: Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Hopefully you've seen this already, but I thought it also deserves repeating.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure recommends the following screening guidelines:
--Mammograms every year starting at age 40.
--Women under 40 with a family history of breast cancer or other concerns should talk with a health care provider. Screening tests may be needed more often and/or started earlier.
--Clinical breast exams by a health care provider at least every 3 years starting at age 20, and every year after 40.
--Breast self-exams every month starting by age 20.

October: Dinosaur Month

October is Dinosaur month....who knew!

Ideas to celebrate Dinosaur Month:

Dinosaur coloring pages here and here

Visit the Saint Louis Science Center and see a life-sized animated Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops in the Ecology and Environment Galleries

Go to your local libary and check out books about dinosaurs. My favorite: Danny and the Dinosaur.

http://www.kidsdinos.com/

http://www.kidsites.com/sites-edu/dinosaurs.htm

I'd love to hear any other ideas you have, post them under the comments section.

toddler art project

We were lucky enough to have a large piece of corrugated cardboard in a box we have. it is maybe 1 yard square. well it it the perfect surface for coloring. I just lay it on the floor and give my son some crayons. he sits on it or lays and colors. The crayons make a cool sound running over the ridges in the cardboard and it seems to hold his attention a little more the regular coloring does. It's so large that he's been able to color on it several times and we're not done yet. This has definitely been the most coloring I've been able to get out of my kid. Maybe yours would think this is fun too.

I just love Queen Bee on Brentwood Blvd. (between Manchester and Elm). It is a small locally owned drive through. I like it much better than Starbucks. I love that I can drive through and pick something up while running around without having to get my toddler in and out of his seat. The coffee is hot and yummy. They have other drinks as well. Great lemonade. kiddie drinks (or are happy to just refill your tot's cup with water). soups (I've never tried them). baked goods (the raspberry scones are soooo good). It's a great little place to get your caffeine or sugar fix while you are out and about.

boogie wipes

I got these the last time my son was sick after reading great reviews about them from other moms. They are saline wipes designed to wipe little noses with. I totally like the idea of a moist gentle wipe to get off the gooped up and stuck on crust from my little guy's nose. At home I often use a warm wet washcloth on his nose. Although I don't absolutely love these wipes as other moms have, and they didn't have my son running to me for nose wipes, I do like them from keeping in the diaper bag, they are much gentler on sensitive sickly noses then the dry tissues I would otherwise use when we are out and about.

click here for the boogie wipes website where you can join the "boogie bunch" and get a $1 off coupon

I found boogie wipes at Walgreens. You can also order them from diapers.com coupon code "Jami" will get you $10 off your first order of $49 or more and go through ebates for cash back.

Do you have a little helper?

If your toddler is like mine he loves to help. My son is great about putting his dirty clothes in the hamper. I'll often hand him items like bibs out of the washer to throw into the dryer. Now I've found a way to include him in other aspects of laundry. I put his folded clothes into a small clean shopping bag (one I had from old navy) for him to carry to his room. Much easier for him to navigate than a basket. And it really does help me out as my hands are free to carry my own clothes. And he looks pretty cute with his bag slung over his shoulder like mommy. He's very proud to be mommy's helper and when he is involved it is so much easier to get what I need to get done done.

Pancakes....keeping them warm

This one certainly falls under "why didn't I think of that sooner"
Making pancakes with my son this weekend I was in a dilemma. If I served him pancakes as they cooked he'd be done before I had cooked the whole batch, but how to really keep pancakes warm and yummy...hmmm....then the answer came to me....stoneware!! I heated a piece of stoneware in the microwave, put the finished pancakes in the stoneware and covered with a clean dishcloth. They all stayed nice and warm as the others cooked and were still warm when we had finished eating. Complete success. This is definitely going to be my new pancake routine.

tyke light Jr

I was very excited about the tyke light jr for our trip. Since we went to Ireland we didn't want to deal with outlet adapter and that this light ran on batteries seemed perfect. It is also small and light weight, great for travel. However, I was slightly disappointed in the amount of light it gave off. Even in the "low" setting the small light illuminated the entire room. Much more light than what my son is used to when sleeping. I do like the idea of being able to see my son if I have to go in to help him during nights in strange places, but this was a bit too much light for him to have on for sleeping. If your child typically sleeps with a significant amount of light than this is a good light for travel or everyday use. If you child is used to less light when he/she sleeps you might want to think again before purchasing.

DHA--do you supplement?

I'm sure you've all heard by now about the importance of omega 3's (EPA & DHA) and how they impact brain development and function. Even many prenatal vitamins now include DHA. Of course giving your child supplements is a decision made on a personal basis by you in consultation with your pediatrician. I give my son the children's dha from the nordic natruals brand. If you STL mamas would like to learn more about these products they will have a representative at Whole Foods Galleria September 13, 20, and 27 from 2:00 to 5:00pm. May be worth checking out and seeing what they have to say.

Free Infant Eye Exams

For babies ages 6-12 months.
visit infantsee.org to find a provider
we did this when my son was about 9 months old. they did dilate his eyes at that time so if you have an infant pair of sunglasses bring them along (they gave us something there, but he didn't really keep it on). The exam was easy and my son sat on my lap the whole time. Not at all tramatic.

Quick Tip: learning to walk

Is your little one learning to walk? If so keep those feet bear as much as you can. They can really use their feet better that way, receive the sensory feedback they need from the ground, and feet are naturally non-slip. (would you want to learn to write your name with thick gloves on?) Of course if you're going to a park or someplace with potential hazards they will need protection, but otherwise let the feet be free. Heck, they are so cute anyway who'd want to cover them up?

Fruit Fly Solution

If your baby is like mine you have a constant supply of ripe bananas which means you likely also have. . . fruit flies! Well, I stumbled across a great solution. I had a wine bottle that was emptied but of course as it set there by the sink waiting to be recycled a little more wine pooled in the bottom. I few days later I went to rinse the bottle, and to my surprise there were many fruit flies floating in the wine. I assume the sweet wine attracted them into the bottle and then they couldn't find their way out. A lucky coincidence for me. Unfortunately I had already poured what was in the bottle out before I realized what has happened. Since then I have refilled the bottle with a little sugar and apple cider vinegar, this doesn't work quiet as well as the wine however but will work in a pinch. What a cheap and easy solution! Hope it works for you too.

Spaghetti Sauce

We've had an excess of yummy homegrown tomatoes so I've tried out a few different ways to make spaghetti sauce. With not a drop of Italian blood in me this did not come naturally. First I made a fresh sauce with ripe tomatoes, the sauce was good but a little thin for our taste. For my second attempt I used my Muir Glen canned tomatoes, tomato sauce, and tomato paste, fresh garlic, fresh local mushrooms, fresh local zucchini, and a green pepper I grew. I cooked this all for a few hours in a crock pot. This was a thicker meatier sauce, so I felt I was getting closer. Finally tonight I think I got it. In fact I followed a recipe from a baby and toddler cook book, The Petit Appetit. First I broiled the fresh tomatoes for 15 minutes. Then sauteed the onion, peppers, garlic. Added the tomatoes (ran threw the food processor), a little vegetable stock, spices, and a little canned tomato paste. Simmered for 30 minutes. Then added a tsp of honey and finished off another 10 minutes. Nice, thick, yummy sauce. I could have added mushrooms to give it some meatiness, but we didn't get any this week and it was very good without. Most recipes I looked at called for a bay leaf, I've left it out every time just because it is something I don't keep on hand. The best part about making this now is to make enough to freeze for use when the ingredients are no longer in season.
Hope you are enjoying tomato season as much as we are.

mutli-vitamin for toddlers

I just started giving my toddler these multivitamins. Of course this this a decision you should make along with your pediatrician.

Here is what I liked about them
  • most other vitamins I looked at started at age 3 or 4, you can start these at 13 months
  • the loads of vitamin C (I was looking to build immunity before our upcoming trip)
  • no added sugar
  • my friend used them with her son and he's not contracted colds from the YMCA's nursery since starting them
  • they are from a company I trust
  • my son can easily chew them, once you bit in they break up quickly

What I don't like about them:

  • they are "candy like," but so were all the others I looked at, so it's really nothing against this particular brand, just how kid vitamins are I guess
  • the dosage for my child's age does not contain the recommended 400 IUs of vitamin D, but that is ok too since I already have a year's supply of D drops

Recycle at Origins

From Origin's website:

"Everyday packaging accounts for approximately 1/3 of all landfill waste.
Most community recyclers only take items made from materials that are easily recognized - such as soda and water bottles.
Cosmetic and toiletry bottles, tubes, caps and jars among those items not easily recognized and therefore not often recycled"

So what are they doing about it?

"bring your empty cosmetic tubes, bottles and jars, etc. - regardless of brand - to your nearest Origins retail store or department store counter nationwide.* All returned packaging will be sent back to a central location where products will be recycled or used for energy recovery"

Trail Mix Day August 31

Coming Soon...Another Fun Day to Celebrate....Trail Mix Day!! (hey, why not?)
And this one comes with a free outing for St. Louis Mamas. Just bring you little ones to Whole Foods Galleria between 1:00 and 4:00 to make their own trail mix....FREE!! Sounds like a fun outing. If you're not in STL, look for it in a Whole Foods near you. That not a option? Celebrate the day anyway by picking up seeds, nuts, dried fruit, etc, etc, and creating your own at home. For very young kids you may want to just use cereals (puffed rice, oat o's, puffed wheat, etc.) that are easy to chew and not a hazard. A great hands on activity for kids. You could even step it up for older kids by talking about the nutritional value of the various ingredients. Again I choose not to give my toddler nuts until he's three, this is a choice you make between you and your pediatrician. Please also be cautious with little ones and the ingredients may pose choking hazards.

--my cousin SS and her constant love, support, and advice

--that my baby is a good sleeper

--my washing machine

Just a story. . .

So my cousin calls today to tell me about her 2 1/2 year old. She had her first real shopping experience over the weekend. She gathered her very own money, put it in her purse, and left to go shopping with her daddy, . . . to the farmer's market!! She picked out some corn and an apple and paid for them herself. She was so proud of her purchases. And what mom wouldn't be proud of that little girl. Of all the things to spend money on she chose fresh, local, yummy fruits and veggies. Way to go mom!

Organic Diaper Sale

Gerber Graduates Deal at Target

OK, so in general I HATE Gerber Graduates. I hate the entire concept of toddler tv dinners. I firmly believe your child should be eating what you eat by the time they are toddlers. However I did see something in Target today that caught my eye. Gerber Gradates Smart Sips beverage made from milk free of antibiotics and growth hormones....Try me FREE. It is made from fat free milk though so if your tot is still on whole milk you may store it for a while. The other reason I went ahead and picked it up is that it does not need refrigeration (just the the Horizon milk boxes) so I thought it might be good to store and have on hand for trips. To sweeten the deal I also picked up the GG whole grain animal crackers (for the days when I can't make my own) for 1.99 and used the target coupon for $1 off 2 Graduates. The best part is I didn't even have this coupon on me, why would I have, but some nice couponer had set down the ones she (I assume) wasn't going to use on the shelf.

Total out of pocket for Graduates Smart Sips and Animal Crackers $0.99....not bad.
